Closing times for Sosúa changed to 3am and 4am

The entrepreneurs' association in the Calle Pedro Clisante (Assosacion de Negociantes Pedro Clisante) currently led by Alberto (Tipico Alberto), Wolfgang (Schnitzel Paradise) and the chairman Willy (Latino bar and disco), have finally managed to achieve their ambition: the closing times for bars, discos and restaurants in Sosúa are being extended to 3am on weekdays, and 4am at the weekends.
Last August the three entrepreneurs travelled to the capital Santo Domingo to meet with the Secretary for Internal Affairs and Police, Mr Peatelon. The Secretary for Tourism (Mr Rhadames Guzman) was also present at the meeting, and is a firm supporter of Sosúa. The outcome of the meeting was that the politicians finally agreed that the closing times in Sosúa could be extended. The priest at the Catholic Church in El Batey was also consulted. He had no objections to the later closing times.

Provided that the noise was not excessive and that safety on the streets could be maintained. This meant that the lighting in and around the centre needed to be improved. The police need to be more vigilant when it comes to arresting criminals (weapons/drugs laws) and the motoconchos need to be controlled better.

Contract

The resulting agreement was finally signed on 12 December, in the presence of the town's Mayor, Vladimir Céspedes, the deputy police chief, and representatives of the entrepreneurs' association (Wolfgang, Alberto and Willy).

This contract finally means that the bars, restaurants and discos in Sosúa can now remain open until 3am (Monday to Thursday nights) and 4am (Friday through Sunday).
To summarise, and avoid any misunderstandings: at Christmas and New Year there are no official closing times, so bars and discos can remain open for 24 hours if they wish. However, thanks to the efforts of Wolfgang, Alberto and Willy, plus support by Rhadames Guzman and the hundreds of letters written to the government by the owner of the Merengue Bar (Armando Casatti), the goal has finally been scored. Thanks to the efforts of these entrepreneurs, tourists and residents can now enjoy the nightlife in Sosúa until the early hours of the morning.

Press release

New York.- Associate professor Vincent Guilamo-Ramos of the Columbia University School of Social Work and assistant professor Mark Padilla of the University of Michigan School of Public Health have been awarded a $430,000 grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The grant will be used to develop a venue-based alcohol and HIV-prevention intervention for adults in the Dominican Republic (D.R.).

Among the countries in the Caribbean, D.R. has one of the highest rates of HIV infection. Sex tourism -- tourism in which sexual exchanges with locals are a prominent feature and common motive for travel -- has been the key factor in the region's HIV epidemic. The growth of the tourism economy has also fueled the country's rise of alcohol consumption.

High-use alcohol venues such as bars, discos, hotels, and nightclubs have expanded their supply and availability of alcohol to support the tourist industry. Many of these venues also operate as informal brothels, consequently presenting increased opportunities for HIV-related sexual risk behaviors among tourists, local tourist workers and commercial sex workers.

The proposed study will examine the relationship and emerging problem between tourism, alcohol abuse and sexual risk behavior in the D.R. to develop effective HIV-prevention interventions in high-use alcohol venues. Research will be conducted in the town of Sosúa, a major international tourist destination dubbed as a "sexscape" due to the prominence of sex tourism in the local economy.

"This study moves beyond research focusing exclusively on the characteristics of presumably distinct risk populations, such as sex workers, to focus instead on identifying the features of venues that are salient in creating a synergy between alcohol use and HIV risk in tourism areas," says Dr. Guilamo-Ramos. "In doing so, we hope to develop targeted, culturally-appropriate, applied public health interventions for alcohol users."

Dr. Guilamo-Ramos and Dr. Padilla will also collaborate with professor Yoanis Ferreira Rodríguez Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo Recinto Puerto Plata and Dr. James Jaccard, professor of psychology at Florida International University.

For more information about the study or to interview Dr. Guilamo-Ramos, please contact Jeannie Hii at 212-851-2327 or jy2223@columbia.edu mailto:jy2223@columbia.edu.

SMT
Yes its the end of low season, however the strip is still very busy every afternoon and evening. Lots of new faces and yes its still wild every night. Some people prefer the low season because you dont have to line up for any of the night spots.

What is different this year though, is that the economy is dangerously depressed. Tourism is down by as much as 40%. Up to 60% of the hotel staff have been laidoff on the north coast.., meaning many more desperate people. Remember life is tough there and you are at times the only source on income. Be decent and show understanding, but also be careful as this situation brings out the dark side and criminal mind. Remember the season and be generous to those that deserve it.

Some changes in town are as follows:

The main street Pedro Clisante is one way now ....away from the Beach and the new Casino and runs as far as the Super Super liquor store. This is only enforced up until the Amet Police finish work, which is, at latest 9pm. Then it goes back to both ways.

For you motorcyclists, wear a helmet during the day anywhere in town. Amet will usually let the Dominicans get away with it because they have no money. You do and they will get you. They may even take your bike to ensure that you pay. Bin there , done that.

If you have a sport muffler, keep it quiet around Amet.

New Garden  bigger and better, plus more expensive. $65.00 per night.

Lots happening in town. New construction, new businesses and more buildings are being painted up.
The Bar Central is popular because the prices for a beer are 20 pesos less. Merengue is at 100 pesos downstairs now. Classico also at 100 per beer. El Flow sells beer for just 50 pesos. Vey busy. Mostly Domincans.

US exchange still around 33 to 34.40 for 1 dollar . Stable.

Police Sting Cataches Thirty Mugger Hookers

In a sweep led by Captain Pedro Clara de la Cruz, the Tourism Police (POLITUR) arrested thirty women accused of prostitution and harassing tourists in Sosua.
The women, originally from various parts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti were arrested after complaints from hoteliers, businessmen and tourists in Sosua.
According to some of the complaints, the women were engaged in prostitution, but also drugged their clients so they could steal their wallets, cameras, jewelry and other valuables.
This latest “clean-up” action from POLITUR comes just after the recent replacement of the National police in Sosua as reported by the Adscene two weeks ago.
Residents we spoke to in Sosua are hopeful that police are now serious about reducing crime and corruption in the area.

Sosúa boasts another new disco

The casino being built alongside Hotel Sosúa Bay is finally reaching the completion stage.
After One Discotec

But it's more than just a casino - there will be conference and meeting facilities, as well as apartments. A new disco has been set up on the ground floor and is now fully furnished. This disco is called 'After One' - which is a good choice because it will be an addition to the current dance venues such as Merengue Bar, SeaCret's and the Latino Bar. When these discos have to close at 1:30 (weekdays) and 2:30 (weekends) then you can now move on to the After One, which will stay open until the early hours of the morning.

Chandeliers

The disco has been beautifully furnished, with a small bar to the left of the entrance, which leads to the first dance floor. An long oval bar has also been set up in the middle of the room, then there's a second dance floor with a large bar at the end. There are seats to the left of the room, which provide a good overview of the dance floor. Everything has been fitted out using luxurious materials. The lighting gives a good atmosphere, with sidelights and chandeliers. The disco can certainly compete with luxury dance venues in Europe or the USA.
Sosúa can now boast of yet another excellent disco, where people can enjoy themselves even if it's after 1am (After One).

Drinking tonight? Then don't drive!

Motorists who are caught drinking and driving can expect to pay a considerable fine, or even be put in jail. The Ministry of Police and Interior has issued a decree stating that motorists will now be checked to see if they have been drinking. Even taking alcohol in your car is forbidden, unless you are transporting unopened bottles or cans of drink.
Dominican Today reports that the AMET (traffic police) has now been issued with 1000 breathalysers.
You have been warned!
Don't drink and drive!
